National Historic Landmark District

For the record there are presently something under 2500 designated National Historic Landmarks. As far as I can determine, there is no separate list of designated "Districts", but Dick went through the full official list (as of late 2006) and counted the ones that are entitled "historic district" and came up with 132 NHLDs. He probably missed a couple as he scanned the list, but that has to be a pretty good ball-park number. Most of these NHLDs are tiny compared to Butte-Walkerville-Anaconda, and some amount to just 3 or 4 properties, or 1 or 2 square blocks. Near as Dick can determine, #2 after Butte by resource count is Savannah, and its 2000 or so contributing properties are about a third of ours -- but they also have seven separate National Register Districts, so Savannah's total number of National Register properties probably exceeds that of the Butte-Anaconda-Walkerville NHLD.

Note, too, the difference between National Historic Landmarks and National Register properties: There are some 80,000 of the latter.

For reference, here are contributing property counts from some NHLDs:

  • Durango, CO NHLD- 86
  • Telluride, CO NHLD - 300
  • Ft. Leavenworth, KS NHLD - 237
  • Roycroft Campus, NY NHLD - 14
  • Monmouth, IL NRHD - 62
  • Marshall, MI NRHD - 850
  • US Naval Academy, MD NHLD - 100+
  • Ft. Sheridan, Chicago NHLD - 94
  • Beaufort, SC NHLD - 430
  • Central City-Black Hawk, CO NHLD - 400
