Use an Outline

Section headers are really easy to make:

== Header== ===subheader===

Dividing your page into sections makes it not only easier to read but faster to scan for pertinent information. Few will read the wiki like a book but many will scan it for that bit of information that they require. The Table of Contents is automatically generated once there are four headings. See Wiki Formatting for a quick list of common wiki formatting.

See also Guide to a basic article.

Link Heavily

While one is writing its best to make internal links out of anything that should be in the wiki. Even if you’re not sure make it a link anyway. You don’t have to fill the data in now but someday you might. If you know a relevant page already exists then by all means link to it so it’s easy to get to. Links must be spelled and capitalized exactly the same as the name of the article, although a redirect can be made for common variations.

Link addresses, architects, anything you think may be worth an article on its own. For names and addresses, use the reverse format, such as [[Shanley, George|George Shanley]], which produces George Shanley but links correctly to the page named "Shanley, George". Likewise, [[Galena 17 E.|17 E. Galena]] produces 17 E. Galena -- displaying "17 E. Galena", but linking to the page named "Galena 17 E."

Remember: Connections between data are themselves data.

Be Complete

The wiki is here to capture data that will be forgotten in time or simply isn’t known to everyone. Take the time to be complete, not only in recording the information but what that information is and why it its important.

Include Categories

See Categories for more information.

Keep The Pages Short

Don’t leave out detail but always look to determine if this a page shouldn’t be a couple pages, instead one big one. It's much better to have smaller more numerous pages that are linked to from other pages were the information is the most relevant. For example, don't give an architect's whole biography on a page about one of the places he designed; instead, put something concise, and link the architect's name to the article about him or her.

Fill Out Redirects

After a new page is finished (that is sure to be loaded with internal links) it should be scanned for entries that refer to the same thing but have different names like NHLD and National Historic Landmark District. The needed redirects should be made to make sure they end up going to the same spot. This will prevent duplicate pages in the future, and make the wiki more robust. The more pages redirected to one topic the greater the chance that a new internal link to that topic will be already properly labeled. Further it never hurts to preemptively do the same for a new page. More information
