Help:Everything I created came out in a box that scrolls horizontally off the screen

You have put a leading space (or a tab, which you might have done to indent a paragraph) at the start of a line. Wiki markup language can't accept a leading space - it puts it in that box you saw. Just remove the space, and all will be well.

To indent on purpose, as with normal keyboard tabs, use one or more colons at the very start of the line, like this:

This line is not indented
:Here we have one indent
::This one sets in two tab widths
:::Now we are three in

When you type the above in the edit box, it generates the following display:

This line is not indented

Here we have one indent
This one sets in two tab widths
Now we are three in

Note that this will not create a tab-like indented first line, but rather will indent the entire paragraph. The next paragraph shows this.

This is very useful when you have "conversations" on talk pages (discussion tab at the top of every page), so that you can see exactly who is responding to who. For an example, look at the back-and-forth between Max and Dick on Dick's talk page. It is even more valuable when multiple people are involved in the conversation.
