Charles M. Prentice was a local architect known for his "interesting fenestration patterns" and creative facades. He was initially in business with Joseph S. Chevigny, but worked on his own later. He became mill foreman for the M.J. Connell Lumber Co. in 1895, and left Butte for Los Angeles in 1899 for a brief stay, but returned to Butte by 1900. He lived at 600 W. Quartz and next door at 301 N. Crystal in Butte. Examples of Prentice’s work are 301 N. Crystal, 206-212 N. Clark, and row houses at 209 N. Idaho. Prentice also designed the east wing, bay, and porch for the M.J. Connell house at 301 W. Granite St.

Prentice was born in August 1848 in Connecticut; his wife Celia was born in February 1849 in Ohio. Son George was born in April 1877 in Wisconsin, and daughter Lula was born in Texas in September 1885.
