Butte Art Stained Glass Works, in the 300 block of South Main, operated from 1892 to 1904. It was the only exclusive stained glass factory in Montana until 1899, when competition from the short-lived Decorative Glass Works when the first manager, William H. Johnson, left, to be replaced by Alvin D. Shelton.

Shelton served as manager until Butte Art Stained Glass closed in 1904. Beginning then, Shelton ran the Butte Glass Works, a more comprehensive glass company that added automobile windshields to its stock by 1918. Butte Glass moved from the South Main store to other parts of Main Street (200 block), South Wyoming, and South Utah while it was in business until the mid 1980s. In 1984, the company became Butte Glass at 840 S. Arizona, which is still in business in 2007.
