Basics of Editing
From ENHLDWiki
New users: Only registered editors can change articles. To register, you need to be approved. Please send an e-mail to one of our Administrators, Dick (rigibson@earthlink.net) or Max (max@buttenhld.org). If you are not known to us, please include some background about yourself and what kinds of contributions you expect to be making to this project.
The HELP for Editors link in the navigation box at left contains specific guidance that is (we hope) actually helpful (italics, inserting photos, categories, common problems, and more) - a quick scan early in the game may save you some grief.
First, look through the Content Index list to see if the property you want to work on already has a link. Blue links are articles that are started (existing pages) but most are barely started and only have a category listed and no real content, so feel free to add to them. Just click and go to the edit tab at the top of that page. Names in bold have more than start-up content, but please edit those articles, too.
To make a new page not listed there, simply Edit the Content Index page (tab at top), and type the name of the property you want the new page about, in alphabetical position, between pairs of square brackets. Use the reverse address format, followed by a vertical pipe (the symbol above the backslash on your keyboard) and the display text, like this: 803 W. Park. Save that page. Your input will appear as a red link. Click on it, and you will be taken to a new edit box where you can just start typing. Don't forget to save your new page by clicking the button beneath the edit box you have been typing in!
Properties with street addresses are in alphabetical order by street name, followed by numerical order by address. The Content Index page also indexes articles about specific streets, but does not list non-property articles such as those about people (residents, architects), organizations, or thematic history summaries.
It is suggested that property articles be named according to the most familiar name - thus, "Metals Bank" rather than whatever the address is. We will create redirects for alternative names or addresses. Also, please add appropriate categories to articles you create, by adding (or whatever appropriate) at the bottom of the text as you edit. See Special:Categories for the list of existing categories. Every building (including lost ones) should at least go in .
Please try, to the extent possible, to include references in your work, rather than just adding "stuff you know." This will make the project a more reliable, encyclopedic resource.
Dick added a draft "info box" for basic information at 301 N. Crystal. As with everything, this is subject to review, discussion, and consensus-building -- let's decide if this is adequate and is what we want before copying it to multiple pages.
You can find a bit more guidance at Guide to a basic article, but an important rule is Don't worry about making mistakes.
